Roger Federer Wins Eight Basel Title to Pick 95th Overall Title

Roger Federer was able to secure his seventh title success of the season after winning the Swiss Indoors Basel title. After missing the last year’s tournament at home, Federer did not put a foot wrong in this year’s edition as he was able to beat Juan Martin del Potro in a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 match to win this title. This was also has eight title at Basel and also marks his 95th in his career. After the game, Federer paid tribute to his opponent by claiming that it was an impressive performance from the Argentine even with the season fast approaching to an end.

Since both players were tired after a long campaign, this match was not expected to witness great tennis. Yet, the 36-year-old managed to produce a brilliant game – despite being on the court for the last four consecutive weeks – to register the eighth title at this event. He has been able to appear in the finals on 13 occasions. It looked like there was a danger of this 13th final being unlucky for the Swiss master when del Potro was able to break in the third set in order to stop his momentum. Even though he was able to get a decisive advantage in the decider. However, Federer was once again able to make a turnaround by coming up with two breaks. Those two decisive breaks were able to decide the championship for the 36-year-old.

After the game, del Potro was also complimentary about Federer by claiming that he would love to be still playing at the top level when he was 36. The Argentine is now facing a big fight in order to qualify for his fourth ATP finals at 29 years of age. Federer is now only behind Jimmy Connors, who has 109 trophies, in terms of the overall titles. Yet, the Swiss master has been able to get to eight or more titles at three different events – Wimbledon, Basel, and Halle.
